Standards in surge protection

• Product standard : IEC 61643-1, this document addresses perfomances tests for AC surge protective devices (SPDs) following different classes (Clas I,II or III test). It's mainly dedicated to surge protector manufacturers.

• Gerneral Rules : IEC 60634 standard :
- Section 4-443 : is intended to describe the means by wich transient overvoltages can be limited to reduce the risk of failures in the installation, and in electrical equipment connected to it, t an acceptable level.
- Section 5-534 : this section gives the basic requirments for the selection and implementation of the SPDs for electrical installation of building to obtain a limitation of transient overvoltages.

• Selection and application guide : IEC 61643-12, this guide addresses the selection and application principles of SPDs in practical situations.
